I honestly thought we had a few hard left Socialists on this forum, but they don't seem to be interested in poor old Tommy Sheridan's court case re perjury, which started a few days ago.

Wot, no support?, I ask, Wot, no defence? come come lads, surely you have a view? and with his involvement in the SSP (Scottish Socialist Party), Militant Tendency, & Scottish Militant Labour he's got really good credentials..

I've been following it, makes good entertainment (Wonder if he's still got his £200,000?)...;)

Hardly a great shock, he is a politician after all and it sure isn't limited to the socialist parties is it.

"Jeffrey Howard Archer, Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare (born 15 April 1940) is an English author and former politician.
Alongside his literary work, Archer was a Member of Parliament (1969–74), deputy chairman of the Conservative Party (http://forum.caithness.org/wiki/Conservative_Party_(UK)) (1985–86) and was made a life peer in 1992. Having suffered several controversies, his political career ended with his conviction and subsequent imprisonment (2001–03) for perjury (http://forum.caithness.org/wiki/Perjury) and perverting the course of justice (http://forum.caithness.org/wiki/Perverting_the_course_of_justice). "[lol]

If Guilty he will just be another in a long line of corrupt politicians, not least in the list are many Right Wing conservative politicians, and lets not forget the other scandals of members of that great party that upholds traditional values and morals, normally while carrying on as the upper classes often do, with double standards and one rule for them and another for the masses.

By the way, my view may not be valid as I class myself as a socialist, but also a realist and certainly do not lean to the hard left despite having been both shop steward & official picket in my time.;)

Tommy Sheridan and Derek Hatton to me are/were tarred with the same brush, a couple of glory seeking, useless money grabbers and charlatans.
I think Mr & Mrs Sheridan are the same, guilty as sin.

I also have been a union rep/shop steward, and been in strikes, does that make me a better person.....in hindsight NO

Golach, If you believed / believe in what you were fighting for, and did so for the greater good rather than your own ends then I believe it does make you a better person.

The problem lies, as it always does, that power corrupts, there are those who will always abuse that power for there own ends to the loss of the greater cause, Tory, Socialist, Liberal and Militant alike.

Unions used properly and behaving responsibly are in my opinion one of the few things available to help the working man, and we have a lot to thank them for in years gone by, used badly and for other peoples self agendas as came about in some instances in the 1970's they can only fail.

I believe we still need them, and the people who give their time freely as union "activists" who do so through genuine belief and the desire to make a difference for the better whilst retaining a sense of realism in what will work.

Those who follow the democratic process, and represent their fellow members views rather than simply peddaling their own should be applauded. These are the true socialists and unionists.

that power corrupts

'tis true!
Regardless of your political divide, aspirations or background. Power corrupts.
Not necessarily financial or pecuniary gain but the ego grows and the self belief is often bolstered with false pretensions.

Egotism amongst Politicicians isn't simply a state of mind, it is a corruption of the personality syndrome that borders upon obsession.

It would have been easier to say that they are all full of s**t!

We who try to abstain are in fact worse, because we lazily tolerate them. If only we could wake up and learn not to do that. :)
