I have just read this story about a man who killed his wife of 30 years, it seems he was subjected to years of violence and bullying by her.
He was sentenced to 4 years 8 months which is not a huge amount of time for manslaughter but I can't help thinking had it been a woman the story would have been very different, even the judge in his closing statements seemed to take a pop at the man for being a weak person.

There have been many cases of women being given short or suspended sentences in the opposing case, usually where there is enough corroboration from others as to the level of abuse they suffered. I'm not sure what you mean by "the story would have been very different". Do you think a woman would have received a harsher sentence or a lighter one? Sadly, the sentence an abused woman receives is often death - at the hands of her abuser.

I think a woman in that situation would have received a lighter sentence and not been patronised by the judge at the sentencing.

Aye i agree with you. But it does come from society itself. From a young age a boy will be expected to be tough and be told the saying i really hate "Boys don't cry" where as girls it seems are expected that they must show weakness. Any wonder when a man who is scared suffers for so long, breaks and then is accused of not being man enough to deal with his abusive partner. It takes strength to get out of a situation like he was in, but killing her was not the best idea to get out of it.

Totally know where your coming from...the only case I can think of where it's turned on it's head is the Somebody Andrews? who stabbed her boyfriend and tried to pass it off as a road rage incident.
