'Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion his daughter, Responsibility his son, Reason

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

I Know My Rights

I Want It Now

Someone Else Is To Blame

I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Havent seen this in a while. Common sense I think is just in hiding, the funeral of common sense was just an illusion to make us think that all was lost .......

Thought that was most thought provoking and it rang a bell (About 268,000 results on Google).. but still, it's very very true! ;)

I felt sure I'd seen something like it on BBC, so curiosity got me going, and I think this was it; Still holds true and I agree 100%..

Some of those points are valid, while some are a bit trite, but the one about the woman with the cup of coffee always makes me mad. Here are a few facts on the story. The McDonalds restaurant where the woman bought her coffee had already received several complaints about the coffee being too hot. Coffee doesn't need to be as hot as they were serving it; indeed the coffee loses its fresh new-made flavour faster if it's too hot. The woman was burned not because she drank it too hot but because the cup slipped from her hands while she was putting in the cream and sugar. She was sitting in the front passenger seat of a car at the time and so it spilled right in her lap. She suffered third degree burns - bad enough to require skin grafts - on her inner thighs and genitals (imagine your 81 year old granny having such a nasty injury). She had to spend eight days in hospital, and in all took about two years to recover. Now here's where McDonalds got really stupid. Her medical expenses were $11,000 so she sued for $20,000. If they had settled for somewhere in the middle, that would have been that, but they didn't. Only then did her lawyer take it to court. The discovery process uncovered the fact the company had had over 700 similar cases but hadn't reduced the temperature of the coffee. The jury awarded her $2.68 million, reduced on appeal to $640,000, and the whole thing was finally settled out of court for something less than than. Note that both award figures included an 80%/20% split in blame (McDonalds/the plaintiff) since she had mishandled the cup. Note also that the corporation sold about $1.5 million a DAY in coffee alone at that time.
