I have just read a new book in NZ. Doing Well and Doing Good by S H R Jones published 2010.

It tells the story, first of John Ross senior, who with his family was cleared from Kildonan in 1814, made their way North and settled in Gerston, Halkirk where they tenanted a mill from Swanson. John married a Rangag woman Janet Sutherland. Other family members were well known Caithness people. They moved to the Mill at Westerdale at some stage.

Son, also called John Ross, born in Gerston, Halkirk, eventually moved to New Zealand and became incredibly wealthy through hard work and good business skills (later to get an NZ knighthood and become Sir John Ross). He gifted the Ross Institute to Halkirk. His sister Janet Sutherland Ross was actually my ggrandmother. She married Alexander McLeod of Rumsdale, in Westerdale.

Here is the link for the publisher of this book.

This would be an important book for schools/colleges or anyone wanting a really professionally researched book on a Caithness-born successful businessman and very generous philanthropist. I have sent the link to the library at Wick but I do recommend asking any library to acquire this book.

If the link doesn’t work for any reason then visit www.otago.ac.nz/press (http://www.otago.ac.nz/press) and look for Doing Well and Doing Good by S H R Jones in the list of publications.
