Anybody know anything about swords? Have a sword that was given to us recently. The man who gave it away found it whilst tearing down an old drystane dyke near Fortingall at the foot of Glen Lyon in Perthshire. Found it actually buried in the dyke apparently.

Curious as to it's age and so forth... will post a picture as soon as camera battery recharges.

First opinions suggest its a military sword. Maybe 18th Century - sharp on one side and could be as late as the early 19th Centurey. Likely to be an officers sword, Suggestions include taking it to The Scottish Museum in edinburgh where the curator there may be very interested and better able to date the weapon. Another suggestion is to look at the deeds of the land and the house that the dyke belongs top because it might show up a person likely to own such a sword.

hope that helps SJ - let us know what you find out we are very interested

There are some swords here -

It may be a Naval sword - if you have the time to go through the pictures you might find a match....
