After over 30 years in Caithness I thought I was reasonably well up on Caithness History but through browsing Wikipedia I found articles about the Battle of Harpsdale and the Sandside Chase (both linked) which I'd never heard of before. So I thought I'd share with those of you who may be interested.

And yes I'm aware that Wikipedia isn't the most accurate source of info, but these are well written articles with good references!

After reading your post went a search and came up with the above.Next will have to check The OS Maps and see where the grid references are as finding this all very interesting.
Might even have to dig the garden up just in case there's any bones lurking there! Doubtfull though as there was an archaeological survey done before the house was built.

I have the hardback 1973 reprint by Calder and although I have read it through several times I still don't remember either event. And the Harpsdale battle should have stood out as I use to live there. I know its in there as your post and the book confirm it - I just don't think that they are well known events.

Thanks anyway for the info - I had no idea that Calder was now online and so searching has just become far easier!
