that the categories don't seem to be very well maintained?

Lots of old ads that show as recent but when you click on them the last date is one or more years back ...

its the OP's responsibility to report items for sale as being sold so they are removed from the boards, if they are not doing this then the ads will remain I'd assume

You shouldn't be getting that of for sale things as they get automatically deleted after a number of months with no responses.

Having said that, if you are seeing them then the easiest thing to do is use the report post button to bring them to attention of mods/admin.
