Isaac Budge

Has anyone ever come across an Isaac Budge (c1800) from the Caithness area? He was married to Isabella Swanson and they were married 4th March 1821. He died before the 1841 census, so finding info on him is quite tough.

That is a very unusual name. The only one on the IGI index was born in 1791 in Clerkenwell, London of Thomas and Catherine Budge. Did he move from there to Caithness and marry?

If anyone is doing the old parish registers from the area they might come across a marriage during the twenties or thirties.

1851 - Isabella - widow at Ratter.
1851 - George - 19 yrs farm labourer at Ratter
1861 - George - 29 yrs, wife Johan, 24 yrs, son Isaac and dau Catherine at Ratter.
1861 - Isabella widow at Ratter next door to George.
1871 - George, Johan, Isaac 13, Catherine 11, Isabella 8, Johan 6, Georgina 4 and Alexander 1. Geo a shepherd and ag lab at Ratter.
1871 - Isabella 77 yrs widow living next door to George.

George married Johan Shearer on 23/1/1857 at Barrock.

Son Isaac married Isabella Calder. He died 23/6/1924 and is buried in the new cemetery at Corsback. Occupation mason. Address Burn of Ratter, Dunnet. Also buried there is his son Isaac - died 20/2/1898 aged 1 yr and 7 months. Residence is given as 19 Wardlaw Place Edinburgh and Burn of Ratter, Dunnet.

John married Catherine Mackenzie and also had a son called Isaac. in 1861 I think they were in Halkirk although their ages are a bit off track, but children are the same as in the 1851 census when they were in Cooperhill in Dunnet.

My Budge line was also in Dunnet with James Budge and Isabel Swanson, but not connected to this line as far as I can see at the moment.

I'm still looking into this elusive Isaac Budge.

I know that his younger son, George, was born in June 1831 and Isaac wasn't on the 1841 census, therefore he had to have died over those ten years.

However, I have found an Isaac Budge, born on 9 June 1839 and baptised on 4th July 1839, son of John Budge and Barbara Campbell. Witnesses at baptism were ISAAC Budge and an E McLeod.

Could this be the man himself? Does anyone have any links to John Budge and Barbara Campbell?

Sorry, I don't have much. However, there may be a clue or two in here.

From my Caithness William Henderson/Isobell Jack research I've found references to a Donald Budge from Skinnet (he was a witness to Willian H's son John's baptism) and to a Donald Budge who married Isobell Henderson in Latheron on 08 Jan 1788 (and, no, I don't know where that Isobell fits in to my family).

Further to Johanna Shearer - 1841 census she is at Hausters ED6/page 11 in Dunnet with James Bain, Maya Bain and Barbara Bain ( presumably her grandfather , mother and aunt) . In 1851 she is at Scarfskerry - step daughter. Her father John Shearer obviously died prior to 1841 and she was the only child born to this marriage.Her mother married again to Thomas Swanson. Marjory Bain was born in Bower.

I agree with Johan Shearer being born in Watten - she died 17 May 1918 in Dunnet.

Followup :
Lexy or Alexandrina Brodie died in Watten 1873 aged 71 was illeg daughter of Alexander Brodie (merchant in Thurso) and Elizabeth Phimister. Note on 1841 census Lexy is with Eliz Phimster (reads Whipster).
If Catherine McLeod (Johan Shearer's mother) is her Lexy's sister then she is also an illeg daughter of Elizabeth Phimister!!!???
So by deduction and bearing in mind the 1871 censsus showed her as McKay.
I found death cert 1886 for Catherine McKay(nee Mcleod) widow of Neil McKay. She was illeg daughter of Alexander McLeod fishermand and Elizabeth Phimister. Informant g'son Isaac Budge. data from certs mentioned if you want - email me.
