The debate about the mosque being built near the "Ground Zero" in New York...

"So over the past several days here on this blog I have documented that within a three-block radius of the area called Ground Zero there are at least two strip clubs (http://www.mahablog.com/2010/08/03/a-september-11-family-association-supports-the-islamic-center/), plus a number of bars (http://www.mahablog.com/2010/08/10/ends-and-odds-mostly-odds/) (one popular with lesbians). This morning through googling I found a lingerie and porn video shop (http://www.yelp.com/biz/thunder-lingerie-and-more-new-york) about two blocks south of Ground Zero that a reviewer calls “grimy” and “sleazy.” Those establishments have existed in close proximity to Ground Zero lo these many years, and no one seemed to care.
Yet talk about putting up a cultural center within this same area, one that won’t even be visible from the Ground Zero site, and suddenly people start squawking about “hallowed ground” and “sacrilege. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/08/12/AR2010081204996.html)” Give me a break."

Discuss.:confused

do not understand what the problem is - how many of the people killed 9/11 were Muslim other than the ones who were the radical muslims who took part.

There were many many people of different religions so why stop a mosque from being built, have they stopped any other religion building their place of gathering?

If they have allowed bars and other places considered "grimy and sleazy" they should have thought about what they wanted the area to be as before allowing these places to be there.
How far would be acceptable for a mosque to be built from this area - 500 miles or not on USA soil. Wonder what they say if that was the area restricted for building for all places for folk to gather to practise their religion or gather for other reasons - they would soon complain about freedom of rights

Let them build it

I was on first aircraft to leave Scotland after 9/11 to go to Toronto then on into USA, I saw the hurt and fear of the folk as I travelled around and were warey of all folk not American.

Let them build.

There'll always be those who are cannot differentiate between peaceful Muslims and 'terrorists', because that complicates matters for them.

Back in the 1970's Irish catholics were all 'terrorists'

There has to be someone to hate and blame. Unfortunately, it's invariably the peaceful, law abiding ones who take the brunt of the hatred.

The Jews have repeatedly been blamed for various problems over the centuries resulting in atrocities such as Cliffords Tower and the Holocaust.

If one of my relatives were murdered on 9/11, I cant say I'd be very happy.

The mosque is for muslims to use not terrorists and as walter ego says, there is a difference. There is no reason why they shouldnt be able to build.
