Hi all,

Has any one out there have the combination of both free versions of AVG and zonealarm .

I updated to AVG version to 9.00 and it would no longer update.Been to various sites and the opinion seems to be that there is a problem with the new version of AVG.

Any help at caithness .org

I use both with no issues.
Can I suggest you uninstall both programs, switch your computer off and on again (shades of 'The IT Crowd'!) and reinstall both programs.

download glary utils

install it

disconnect from the net

run glary utils

the use the uninstall to remove avg + zone alarm.

run reg util in glary

then reinstall both.

if that dont work

install microsoft security essentials

do you really feel that you need both anti-virus applications installed ?

It depends who's using the pc, how competent they are and what sort of sites they visit and applications they are using on it. I appreciate zone-alarm is as much a firewall as an anti-virus app.

Personally I use Avast, disable the annoying spoken information updates and rely on the firewall in my router and to do the work. I occasionally install ad-aware and and spybot search & destroy to do a scan and then delete anything dodgy they find. After an install 18 months ago as much as they found was a few dodgy tracking cookies.

The latest version of avast (free) has excellent anti-malware website blocking.

I've no problems with AVG exactly but I've found zone-alarm is a whole can of worms all to itself on every machine I've worked on. It's barely tolerable IMO.

As said, it all depends what you do with the pc and who's using it but really for a single competent user it does seem like overkill. I'd at least recommend switching from AVG to Avast. I think you'll prefer it (once you disable sounds).

Other than that I agree with plasticjock as the way to go.

I advise caution with regard to anything which is indiscriminitely purging your registry of 'unnecessary' entries. That's another can of worms which pretty much guarantees your PC a trip to the IT specialist or a re-introduction to the system wipe/recovery disk. Sorry to disagree here with dx100uk whose advise I generally concur with 100%, it's a difference of professional opinion which I'm sure he'll agree I'm entitled to. I've yet to come across any of these system mechanic / registry doctor type apps which does more good than ultimate harm so I've become very cycnical about them.

Hi thankyou for replys.

My zonealarm is fire wall only and as such does not have any antivirus content. However I do have the browser tool bar which is on internet explorer and firefox.Have had AVG for a number of years and happy with it,only had up date problems when I updated to the new version 9.00.
As I stated in my orignal post a look on the internet avg and zonealarn forums, blogs there is some conflict between the two applications.
I am interested to find out if it has been resolved.Agree that Avast is a good free one as I us it on this Win 98se computer, the problem ia on a newer one running WinXP.

Avast will work on any format. and provides a good all round protection range. Avg although does the job also became the demon of windows when xp and then a double wammey when vista approached the scene.

You have two programs fighting to protect the same items and ports. and this will cause a mass number of problems.
If you had also a free time trail of norton at any point make sure you use the norton removal tool and do not trust the windows unistaller that comes with it, use the online remaval app available through googling it.
