The only thing I can think of is the filter? Have you checked it?

I think it could be the bushes/brushes or something like that - I've had this problem before, I think you need an engineer.

it`ll be a 5p piece stuck in the drain hose just before the filter

As Duncansby said, its probably a blockage in your filter. Google the make and model for information on how to find the filter.

Or a thong, as has happened to me on 3 occasions ;)

Been there, found that! Did the Royal Mint design a coin specifically to keep plumbers & appliance engineers in business?

Mind you, It's a great way for the young, single technician to earn the appreciation and respect of a grateful householder...;) just wish the new 5p had been around when I was a young single technician!

Seriously, sounds like RB is correct.

Oh heck, I'm no sure. All the machines I've used have had the little door on the front. What does it say in the handbook?

You had to bring drawers into it, didn't you!

Another popular one is the underwire from a bra getting jammed between drum and tank wall. A great discussion point and ice-breaker after fault recovery!

You people with your thongs and strings
Get stuck in washer filter
And block the outlet with these things
Machine knocked out of kilter
Prevention is the answer sure
Much better than each time a cure
The plumber's bill will make you poor
Though on the floor you've spilt 'er

In order to avoid the shame
Of knickers plugging drain
Take my advice and play my game
Leave out cheesecutter pain
Choose larger pants to cover groove
Your comort will by far improve
And chafing of one's cleft remove
That tiny thing's insane

And just in case you're worried that
Such knickers kill off passion
And that a pair so big and flat
Are hardly height of fashion
There's drawers that prevent overspills
Provoking chance of bouncy thrills
With flaps and gaps and hems and frills
To keep your partner gnashin'
