View Full Version : 8 years gaol for theft but only 3 for child abuse. Is this right?
A man was gaoled today for 8 years for "handling" a stolen copy of one Shakespeare's early manuscripts. There was no violence involved and nobody hurt. Story here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wear-10838480)
Compare this sentence to a guy who pleaded guilty to 32 charges for offences against the children he targeted over the internet.

Is it not time that we took the power of sentencing away from Judges?

the sentence reflects societies attitude to its young. A manuscript versus the life of a child .....
Its shocking to see the sentences handed down to paedophiles but unless society starts making noises that these sentences are wrong nothing will be done.....
whereas a "priceless" artifact was stolen.
We live in a society that places objects before people .....
In some societies the young are disposable ..... the uk disposes of them in a slightly different way but it is still throwing them away.
Recent news item over the weekend of a couple jailed for trafficking children. Children were trafficked into the country, sent out to beg, on being rescued said children were found to have suffered neglect and had cigarette burns on their bodies... the "sentence" was ...... 2.5 yrs

Certainly a poor judgement in this case.

WHAT ABOUT THE PEDOFILES THAT ARNT CHARGED TO LACK OF COLLABERATION .THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WE NEED TO STOP AS THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN , THEY GET JOBS IN SCHOOLS ECT AS NO CONVICTIONS AGAINST THEM.
WE NEED ALL PEODOFILES STOPPED .
WE DESERVE OUR KIDS TO FEEL SAFE NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE.
WE NEED THE LAW TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST THESE INDIVIDUALS AND LOCK THEM UP FOR LONGER .
WE HAVE A LIFE SENTANCE OF WHAT THESE SICK INDIVIDUALS HAVE DONE TO US AND ARE ALWAYS REMINDED OF WHAT THEY DID IE FLASH BACKS AND MORE. SO THEY SHOULD GET THE SAME. IM SCARED FOR LIFE........

Without wishing to sound like a conspiracy theorist, that's what you get when you have lobbying groups corrupting democracy.
There was a story recently where two women got 2 and 3 years for stabbing the partner of one then letting him bleed to death. We do need some sort of legal reform.
You should see how extreme some of the computer crime, piracy and copyright sentences are when compared to what I consider much worse offences.
People need to be careful with "think of the children attitude" remember justice is supposed to be cold and logical not full of emotion and reactionary.
Lets face it, there is no law and order in this country now and justice has long gone out the window. Much of it is down to the Human Rights act which only seems to consider the criminal, not the victim.

i agree 100% they have more human rights than us the victims absolutley atrotious.
whats the point of a justice system when these sick individuals will get of with it time and time again register what register they only put there if charged what about the thousands of pedos that arnt charged they have clean records so can then be employed any where .

Yup, it does need a review.
I think a starter for ten, should be a starter for ten. Any crime of abuse: the minimum sentencing should be 10 years.
Physical abuse: 10 years
Sexual abuse: 15 Years
Child abuse: 20 years to life, leaning more to the life end of the scale.
If it cost a few quid more in taxes than I could handle that if it's spent locking scum up.
If we really are that skint and the gaol service requires austerity measures then RB can bring his gallows and I'll bring me trebuchet to the party.
