Family crest?

Has anyone created their own family crest? If so could you let me know how you went about it?
Does anyone know of any decent websites or books that give you step by step instructions as well as motto meanings, animal meanings etc etc.

I've wanted to do this for a while as our surname throws a blank everytime and as we're moving into our new home pretty soon I'd love to have a brand new Family crest too.

Porcupines???? Blimey I was at least hoping for an Eagle or a Unicorn or something cool like that. Seems I'm going to have to decorate my home with a Porcupine. :lol:
