For the last few weeks a thing kept popping up saying that the life of the battery in my laptop was coming to an end. I think that the end has arrived because now it will only work when plugged into the mains - is it okay to continue to use the laptop like this or will I have to buy a new battery? (Plugging into the mains is no prob because we never use the laptop out of the house)

you can run without the battery , take it out.

in future, its always useful to once a week, run offthe battery and let it go flat or until it saying it needs charging.

they typically should last 2-3 yrs on normal usage

you can replacement ones from ebay
but watchout, don't buy from hong kong suppliers.

Yes u can keep on using it if the battery is flat just as a matter of interest you can get laptops now for about 3 to 4 hundred for an 8 hr battery life these days its not worth repairing a laptop when u look at ththe price of new ones
