Why not just make a web site yourself. If you can make a post here you can make a web site and for FREE as well. Here is a Link where you can make a Free Web Site and they make it very easy with the tools they have. Have a Look as it will save you a LOT of Money. :D

Navertech do websites(based in thurso), they have some pretty good ones they've created. http://www.navertech.com/

I'm sure there was also a recent post about someone willing to design websites to gain experience.

How complex is it, what's involved? PM me details.

I made my own (http://www.julie-fraser.co.uk) via vistaprint, not free and 3 levels to choose from but it suited me fine and I found it easy to do

I use www.one.com for a .com webiste you are looking at £9 plus vat and you can have ANY name that is available without any tags to the 'host' site.

They offer 24/7 online IM help too which is great for helping you through things. They have templates you can customise or you can build your own. I give them a 10/10

I'm in the middle of migrating my site across - this is the rough outline of my site at the mo (still LOTS to do on it so no crit please). Designed straight off one.com

It's all very well creating your own if you have good design ideas and impeccable English and grammar but if you want to market your business professionally you can't do better than Navertech. There's nothing worse than a shoddy website to put you off using a company. Rightly or wrongly one tends to assume that if the company can't pay attention to detail on their website then it would follow that their products or services would be a bit substandard too. I believe that it would be an investment if you were to trust the professionals on this one.

From what I've seen , Navertec are very, very expensive.

How expensive do you class as "very, very expensive"?

Creating a website is simple, designing one which looks good and does what you want is much more difficult.

All depends what you want the site for.

I know someone personally who is a web-site designer. She's not local but does a good job.

I have my hosting with Navertech and they're really good, I just made my own site with some pretty good free software (Netobjects fusion) and got it hosted.

If you want to check out my friends design business Tam just pop me a pm.

I beg to differ, http://www.navertech.com/signup/website-packages. It all depends on the type of design you are looking for

Can you be more specific with your needs:

How many pages?
Does it need to be interactive?
What is it for?
Etc...

I'd stay away from a lot of those pre-packaged pay-for options, most people can identify them by appearance and it's an aversion; I generally think "Argh, another half-assed website, bye bye"

I'm into technology etc so I generally judge a company or person by the quality of their site, can't really speak for the general public.

I'm not a professional web designer and I've never had to hire one so I can't really judge on price. That being said I keep an eye on other IT guys and companies in the area and Navertech do seem to produce the best designed sites.

You get from what you pay for - I'm so annoyed when people are willing for fork over a small fortune for mechanic or plumbing work yet baulk at paying market rate or below market rate prices for IT work.

It all does depend on what you want the site for and how savvy you are with the 'tinterweb.

If the website is your main tool for getting business then you need a decent company not only to design it but to ensure the tags and coding is setup correctly for search engines etc. (Search Engine Optimisation).

If you need something more basic for simple presence on the web then many of the above DIY options are great.
I have designed and hosted many sites over the years, personally I do not like any service for website that is 'free' especially if your website is a business one. Free hosting often attracts ad's on your site or banners & pop ups. Not always but often, also the free hosting can disappear at any minute and have little or no support.

Also free hosting comes with limitations on bandwidth and email etc. be very careful you check this out, also be very careful you retain full control of your domain.

My advice, is to buy hosting. It can be very cheap, a few quid a year (£20-£30) but it pays dividends in the long term and gives you complete control.
I would avoid any hosting that only offers x no of pages, often seems very cheap but if you need to add a page or two later you get walloped.

Consideration needs to be given to your domain name, if you are a business always get a top level domain i.e. .com or .co.uk. Again if you are business (and especially if your trading name / style is important) I would try and register both a .com & .co.uk for your protection against another company trying to pinch or divert your customers.

If anyone is looking for hosting space, send me a PM. I have an abundance of space that is not getting used and is available.

Agreed :) www.one.com only charges £10 per year :)

Lots of Web Design companies offer hosting with them anyway in the same price range/

As for cheap hosting - IT people tend to call it shared hosting - it's definitely worth the consideration but just the most basic of Google search will show you how unreliable a lot of them are.

Either find a web designer or web design company that off their own hosting and related servers or rent a VPS.
