View Full Version : Snakes
I have heard from someone that snakes live in caithness. I was told they live in the gorse and heather. Can anyone clear this up for me as I don't know if they are kidding me on.
The only scottish native snake is the adder. You are not likely to ever see one but they are about.
I have seen an adder in the heather/moss between Strathmore and Loch More. Was quite surprised when it slithered away from near my feet.
Seen adders and grass snakes up on Dunnet head whilst up there in summertimes as we would be looking at the ground for the whole day (we still did peats then)...

Saw two adders one day while waking along the railway track between Watten and Bilbster afew years ago. there are loads of them up the Strath of Kildonnan they lay in bunches of six or seven soaking up the sun. very common to find them laying next the railway line soaking up the heat from the rail. Watch your step !
Thank you all,i thought they were kidding me but i will be watching from now on.
