I am lead to understand that Ach at the start of a place name means above, now if that is the case, where is Varasdal, Astle, Annaras ?
Achscrabster is not above Scrabster so just who is pulling who's leg or is it a deliberate ploy to confuse folk?

I have found two reference to it meaning field and one to it meaning aither field or just "place".
Quoting from one:

Ach- (or Auch-) : From the Gaelic word achadh, meaning “field”. Ach- is generally a prefix used in the lowlands, whereas Auch- is the highland variety.
