Like the Early Thorn already featured in this series, Lunar Thorn holds its wings erect when resting. It is found in open woodland and the adult flies in May and June having over wintered as a pupa below ground. In Caithness Lunar Thorn is much scarcer than Early Thorn and this is only the fourth record since 1975.
