I have been to Hungary a and was recently looking at web site about Hungarian football so I looked at Hungary maps (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/hungary.html)

The first thing I noticed was the title page which stated:

"The following maps were produced by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/cia-maps-publications/index.html), unless otherwise indicated."

I then checked other maps and they all had the same heading!

The conclusion I drew was that the CIA does not believe all the cartographers who have drawn maps so they have commissioned their own.
That is why UK, EEC, Iraq, Afghanistan etc are all now states of the good old USA

I noticed there is a new documentary series started on BBC2 entitled The Beauty of Maps, Wednesday's at 7pm. Catch up on bbci if you missed it.:)

Map lover here too, fighting for space on my walls so they are. Got just loads of old OS of Scotland's mountains and such like, a lot from my grandfather. Someone laughed when we were heading out walking and I loaded up old maps, but I reminded them the mountains have not changed much in the last fifty years! :)

There is a programme on BBC2 tonight at 20:00 entitled "The Beauty of Maps"
This is the first of a series of 4 on this subject.

I like old maps, fascinating things.

I bought my parents a copy of an old map from the early C19th which showed the house we used to have (the one I was born in), and I've got a few bits and pieces scattered around the house.

I'm also fascinated by the 'old' roads and bridges around the Far North that have been bypassed. There's a cracking section of abandoned main road between Kyle of Tongue and Loch Horrible.
It's still passable on a big trailie motorbike, and I love whizzing down it as fast as I can just to see the puzzled look on the motorcamper drivers faces as you appear to overtake them whilst aparrently traversing a peat bog.....
