World Cup Anthems

I debated the placing of this thread, General or Music.

I was reminded today by my son that the German National Anthem is based on the music of Beethoven's "Hymn to Joy". It is one of my favorite pieces. So, thank you DrSzin for randomly assigning me the German Team in the org World Cup Pool.

Now to the theme of the thread:

Do you know your assigned team's National Anthem?
Anyone like their team's National Anthem?
Anyone prepared to sing it at the closing ceremonies? Maybe you won't have to when Germany wins the cup. :lol:

I assume you're referring to Henry van Dyke's Hymn to Joy (http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/j/o/joyful.htm) which is indeed set to music from Beethoven's ninth.

Ode to Joy was written by Schiller and based on the same music from Beethoven's ninth. It's the European anthem, but there's some info about a German anthemic connection here (http://www.answers.com/topic/ode-to-joy).
