I used to live in Henderson Street, and on many a moonlit night you could hear 'The Black Bear' and 'Cabefeidh' drifting o'er the misty whins.
Even today their strains can be heard.
Some say they were one of the lost tribes of israel.
Some that they were slaughtered in 1714 by the outraged citizens of Thurso when they turned up sober for the gala parade.
And it has been said (see Tripepusher, Prof DF, 'Ghostly Pipers of the Highlands', Hodder & Stoughton 1956) that they are the uneasy spirits of a pirate pipe-band, who landed at Scrabster in the dark ages and plagued the whole North coast, kissing girls in Cansibay and harrassing sheep in Bettyhill, who all died in a mysterious plague and whose leader, that demon of the Pibrochead Mad Michael McManglechanter, went to his end crying 'we'll never rest until every whin bush is urk....'
Those are the legends of the Moorside Pipe Band...
