Hello there,

my name is Philip Hiller. I live in Munich, Germany.

I'm going on a tour of Scotland, the Hebrides, and Orkneys with two friends in July and August. We need a way to get from Scrabster to Oban on August 7th.

If you have any advice on taxi fares or a pointer to some local driving service, I would be glad to hear from you.

Best regards,

Philip

Here is a link for citylink buses and you will get all the timetables on it:

Think you would take bus from Scrabster - Inverness - Glasgow then Glasgow - Oban.

Thurso is about two miles from Scrabster - you could walk this in 20-25 minutes, or a taxi would cost around £4.

Hi Phil,

If money is no object and if you are thinking of a taxi, I suspect it is not

Try this: Taxi to Wick Airport, fly scheduled to Edinburgh, Taxi, Bus or train to Glasgow

Then..... Sea plane from River Clyde to Oban:

Let us know how you get on.

Getting complex there ducati, get the float plane from Scrabster direct to Oban.

Or if you do fancy a flight from Wick to Oban, I could put you in touch with a couple of people.

They don't. But seaplane - floats, floats - water, harbour - water. Get my drift? Just charter one.

Could always check out Hamish with his floatplane:

Apologies philler, bit of a thread drift but that is what were good at here. [lol]

Philip,

If you are considering public transport rather than a taxi service you can go by coach from the Scrabster ferry port to Oban.

Check out the options here
www.citylink.co.uk (http://www.citylink.co.uk)

Depart Scrabster 13:02 ---> Arrive Oban 20;27
(Change in Inverness and Fort William)

Though at approx £40 per person BY BUS your thoughts on negotiating a deal with a local taxi might certainly be worthwhile from a convenience point of view.

Hello again,

thanks for your comments.

We now have an offer for 300 pounds in a taxi. Is that realistic, or are we being ripped off?

Regards,

Philip

£300 for a Taxi..........Rip Off............I would say so. Go by Bus it would be a lot less.

I would not consider £300 for a taxi Scrabster to Oban as a rip-off in any way.
Thats 3 people so say £70 each.

A taxi from Scrabster to Inverness was costing about £200 a couple of years ago and Oban is a long & (very) windy road further on.:)

Scrabster to Oban (return) is in the region of 450 miles and say 9 hours driving time.
At £300 for the trip that works out at around £0.66p per mile. With the Inland Revenue mileage rate at 40p per mile (that was based on fuel at less than £1 per gallon :(). At present day costs that rate should be say 50p per mile - it does not leave a lot of profit margin for the taxi operator and driver's wages.
The other benefit by taxi is of course timewise - bus is going to take 7 1/2 hours with a pee stop in Inverness.
Taxi will take around 4.5 hours and will probably stop to pee "at your convenience" and maybe even let you stop here and there to take photies.
No contest in my book.

Okay, point taken,

we now have an offer for 200 pounds (sorry, there is no pound sign on German keyboards). We'll buy the driver a pub lunch and tea ;).

Thanks,

Philip
