The Second Bill of Rights was a proposal made by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his State of the Union Address on January 11, 1944.

It proposed that the following rights should apply to all citizens of the USA:

The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;

The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

The right of every family to a decent home;

The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

The right to a good education.

To what extent do you agree that these should be the basic rights for all the citizens of the UK, and to what extent do you believe they currently exist in the UK?

In an ideal world it should apply to every human being regardless of where they live.
Why should a "developed" country only expect these outcomes?

Far to many inequalities in this world.:(

As for us here living in Britain,believe it or not we are "well looked after".:eek:

But sadly it never worked.

Rights are things conferred by society. The list you cite is, on the face of it, a list for a liberal society.

Yet each one of those points has a great value added qualification attached to it and I suspect they would be resisted every inch of the way- certainly in the states.

As to the interpretation of them - the mind boggles!

A First Bill of Responsibilities would be a more fitting legislature for the American People?

Surely these rights are guanteed by the constitution of the US.
The Supreme Court is the real battleground for rights issues.
Roosevelt was making a political speech with political intent.
Who cares!
