Hi, has anybody else noticed how poorly built the drystone wall is at the carpark around Tesco's Wick? IMHO a five year old could have done better. No wonder it's falling down in places!

When I first saw it I could not understand haw they got away with such a shabby job, obviously the clark of works new no better or he would have condemned it and got proper stonemasons on the job.

No, david, I've not noticed. I used to walk out past it, when it was still being built, on my twice-daily mission to reach Ackergill, the countryside, the beach and freedom (for the dog!)

Now I just drive by at maximum speed (29.9 mph), avert my line of vision at times to avoid looking at Tescos but enjoying Morris Ronaldson's fields at the same time (the dog died).

Are there now some more litter bins and/or doggie poo bins on the route out to Tescos? I would guess not ....

the wall at tescos is a pretty amateurish job, but slightly off on a tangent ...

has anyone noticed the new dry stane wall in Reiss on the left as your heading to Thurso ? it's not long finished, but is an absolute work of art.

Tescos should have spent some of their billion odd profits to employ the guy who built the one in Reiss :)

Another work of art is the dry stone dyke at Broadhaven, at the curve in the road as you head out to Papigoe. Pure genius. Local guy as well. Could show the folk who attempted the tesco wall, a thing or two!!

Both these walls, Reiss and Broadhaven are by the same local builder, Michael Fleming. He makes a wonderful job of them. Good hands on the guy. Dare say its him I'd go to if I needed a dry stane dyke done.

Totally agree with the praise for the wall at Reiss, it is amazing, what a true work of art!

Pictures anyone? I must say I saw the Tesco one when it was first built and thought it didn't look great. A good drystone wall is suppose to last a century or more. Can't see that one making it.

:lol:Watched this one going up. it is beautiful. Michael Fleming is truly talented. I used to have difficulty with Lego when my boys were little, never speak of bricks or stones!
By the way, when did a ston become a stane in caithness and a dick become anything other than a dick?!

Someone built a magnificent retaining wall at the burn (bridge) that runs into Castletown beach. Within a couple of weeks the kids had destroyed in and thrown it in the river

That's nifty. How old is this craftsman and is he training anyone to follow him?

My dad was a bloody good drystone waller back in Yorkshire, he had an eye for a good wall and this has rubbed off on me. I've always admired traditional craftsmen and I watched the walls at Reiss and Broadhaven go up. Excellent work.

There are some good new walls in Caithness. They hopefully compensate for the Tescos mess. Michael Fleming and George Gunn ( his work pictured ) are setting a good standard.

Perhaps one of these craftsmen could go and finish the wall at Wick's memorial garden (or lack of it)

I wonder if the builders who did the tesco's wall in Wick got paid? I would have gave them nought for that standard of workmanship-dreadfull!!

I'm interested - tell us more of this dreadful plannin.

I don't go to a supermarket to look at the superstructure, I haven't noticed anything particularly horrible there.

Other than the dreadful cafe that is!
