Lawn ants ?

I have had an area of lawn about 4ft by 2ft that has been brown for a few years now, the grass never seems to die completely but looks really unsightly.
Today I decided to investigate and found a colony of yellow ants with a nest going down about 6 inches and a lot of root fibres at that depth, the soil also had a foul smell to it and was black in places. there is also an area of grey clay which seems completely out of place. I have dug out to about six inches and intend filling with topsoil and new turf, I wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem.

Living in England ants were a constant source of annoyance.
I remember every year when they'd trek from behind my gas fire, across my carpet and out the patio doors. Seriously there were thousands of em.

Thankfully since moving to Caithness I can honestly say I haven't seen one of the little blighters.
