I posted on the General Messages (see http://forum.caithness.org/showthread.php?t=10659) about a lady named Margery Sutherland from Perth, Australia staying at our B&B who is interested in information regarding her husbands family. The information the family has is simply that her husbands great-grandfather came from Wick. This is what she has:

Her husband is Ian Sutherland

Father: Allan Inglis Sutherland b. 12 Oct 1907 Broadfield, Victoria, Aust.
m. Euphemia Florence Kathleen Cumming b. 22 Jun 1909 d. 1985

Father: Benjamin Sutherland b. 1869 place unknown d. 1938
m. Euphemia Mary Inglis b. 1875? d. 1947

Father: Benjamin Sutherland b. 1825 Wick Scotland. Emigration date
unknown d. unknown m. unknown

Father: John Sutherland b. 1786
m. Louisa Thomson b. 1791

Father: John Sutherland
m. Christian Bain

Margery has only just begun any research and she realises it is rather like looking for a needle in a haystack with this limited information, but one never knows with genealogy...someone out there may have these people in their own lines. :)

I will pass on to her any posts made here or PMs to me. Thanks!

Elenna

Here's two Genealogy forums - maybe worth a try though results might not show till she's home.
http://uk-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB2/index.php?sid=2afefe9675f409f6bf64677a2dc5e0cb

http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/index.php

There's also http://www.caithness.org/history/familyhistory/

Wish there was more time to organise something.
James.

Good info there.
Also the local Archives at the Library would be a great scource of help.
and Caithness Family History Society
www.CaithnessFHS.org.uk (http://www.CaithnessFHS.org.uk) good Message Board

If there's time I would start with Scotlandspeople.
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) for Births deaths and marriages also Census records.
Its quick and quite inexpensive

National Archives in Kew/London would have the Passenger List for when the people left Scotland, giving dates landing etc. ... that takes time !

Good luck

Wow, fred...thats fantastic! If anything it gives Marge a starting place. She wants to know how/where she can access that information herself...is it at the North Highland Archive, or online, and if so, where?

I'm wondering if there have been any updates to this. I wasn't around for a month around the time Marge was heading home.

I haven't checked this forum for a long time, but I did come across this same enquiry on the British-Genealogy.com forum and exchanged emails with Kingetter about it.
Unfortunately at the time Margery had already returned to Australia and he had no further contact so as I did on the British forum, I'll post this message in the hope that Margery will check here sometime in the future and might like to contact me
(I've also checked the members of the Perth (Aus) genealogy group but she does not appear to be a member)
I am a direct descendent of John Sutherland and Christina Bain through Benjamins' brother John Sutherland born 1816.
A number of the Sutherland children emigrated to Australia and I've been compiling some information about them.
I have a web site with contact information at

My gx3 grandfather, Donald Sutherland was also John Sutherland and Christina Bain's son . Unfortunately, I'm still working backwards extending my connections and haven't got any further back with my Sutherland ones yet other than noting his brothers John and Benjamin.
