Beautiful shot Dafi - thank you.
It brings to mind the aurora I would often see at night when driving 'home' to Calgary from a day in the mountains - thanks to the relative proximity of the magnetic north pole.
I left the prairies in 1979, and you just reminded me of one reason why I miss them.

I drove all night in Norway (north of the artic circle) to see the northern lights to no avail. [lol]

That’s the first aurora I have seen for a few years and the first I have tried to photograph. I shot off to the stones for some atmospheric shots but was almost instantly fogged in. They are still going good as I type.

Here are a couple more. The digital camera certainly brings out the colour a lot stronger than you see it with the naked eye!!

Cheers every one.

I certainly wasnt expecting to see them last night and the aurora warning system i use failed to post the event up as well. Just keep looking to the north i supose is the trick. I was out side when they were just begining and thought it was just light shining off a bank of fog over the hills. I thought no more about it and went in to watch motogp but by the time that was over it was well under way. It finaly ended at the back of four with horizontal bands of light a quarter the width of the horizon shooting into the air one after another in spectacular fashion. Its the first lights i have seen for years and the first time i have had a camera....god bless digital!!!

This is a panorama shot with six photos linked together.

Excellent Dafi, what's this "the aurora warning system I use"?
Be very interested, as seen em a number of times over the years, and over here out on Strathy Point, get beautiful views...

Loving the panoramic shot dafi, we kept looking earlier as our aurora watch site was saying there was a slight chance but afraid we were tucked up in bed when the fireworks began.Saw the last lot though back in November so I'm not completely green with envy!

I have two sources I keep an eye on bekisman. The first is a gadget I have on my blog.

This is in the bottom of the side bar.

The other is in the side bar of Orkney communities’ web site.

To be fair I did only have a brief look at them after the event.

Great panoramic Dafi, you did really well.

My wife uses the following link for warnings. If you register (for free) they will e-mail you when activity is likely to lead to an appearance of Northern Lights.

We saw the magical display from Groats at 1.35a.m. this morning. I thought the hall light was on and got up to switch it off - the whole of our landing was lit up!

I was gobsmacked - never thought I'd see anything like that in my lifetime. The stars were amazing too.

We couldn't find the camera - typical!!
Sorry folks, if it happens again, I'll get pics:D

I saw what I thought was the lights at around 1am then went to watch a film. I went outside again about 2:30am and watched the specticle... absolutly fantastic... It looked like 3 fixed spotlights with waves of light flowing across the sky at right angles to them... beautiful watched until 3:50am... then reluctantly went to bed...

Love the piccies Dafi...

They were pretty bright! Pity the mist was hiding part of them.

Here's another aurora forecast link that's worth a look - http://www.gedds.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/
I got it from Jim Johnston on one of his recent monthly astronomy slots on Caithness FM.

These are superb dafi. Thanks for posting them. I love the Northern Lights - who needs TV when Mother Nature does such a wonderful job?!

I've used that web site for a while without great success. I would heartily recommend another site which has taken its place in my favourite bookmarks. Give it a try. And it will be even better when they have the short-term forecast working again. http://www.gedds.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/

Thankyou Dafi.

I saw them when I was a kid in Thurso - but you take them for granted then. The heavenly dancers. I have never seen them as an adult. This time of year do you see them most?

I need a Caithness fix - maybe I can persuade herself to head north next year.

Your very welcome John. As i see it, it is all about getting the word out so as many folks as possible get to see them. Thats one of the great things about the forums, shame it was so late at night.

I allways think of them as an autum/winter sort of thing. They are also cyclical over an eleven year or so period. We have been at the bottom end of the cycle for a while but there seems to be increasing activity in the northen lattitudes so i hope we may see some more before the advent of the light nights!

There is a facebook page i found last night called Northern Lights. It is worth a look as there are some stunning images and some amazing video.

Can't believe I missed it. Is it common for the lights to continue for a few nights or just by chance it occurs on the one night? Regardless I will probably stay up a little bit later and see what my chances are. Photos are spectacular thanks for putting them up.
