Drove down to Lochiver on Sunday (4th April) in near perfect weather conditions. Had to stop myself stopping EVERY 5 miles as the views were just so inspiring and camera friendly. Here are a few of the many images captured.

Thanks for all the kind words folks. I knew as soon as I got to about Tongue that I was potentially sitting on a gold mine of a photo day. (for me, a very rare event!)

The weather was absolutely fabulous (which makes taking the shots so much easier and much, much less work), the cloud cover perfect, I was also on my own, and had the whole day to stop as often as I pleased (what a HUGE difference that makes when I don't have any family or time pressures to load my head with!).

The timing with the snow still on the mountains all the way down also made for fantastic (almost magical looking) landscape shots. Took about 300 images that day. Even though the following 2 days at Achmelvich were very poor, it didn't matter.

Not that i'm thinking of getting one or anything like that ;) but how are you finding the 5D MK II and full frame format?

Start saving MPH. Highly recommended.

Just LOVE the full frame format and 21Mega pixel pick-up files are fantastically detailed (about 60Mb in size, uncompressed!!) Colour balance, definition, clarity are all improved from my 40D. I did also have to abandon my beloved Sigma 10-20mm and get a 17-40mm L f4 because it wasn't compatible with the bigger sensor.

You will also need a serious PC to push all that data (I'm currently on an Intel i7 CPU (8 cores) with 12Gb or RAM!! and Window 7, 64bit - lovely ;-))

Not really D.

I am prepping 120MB to 300MB uncompressed scans on a laptop with 4GB no problem. Just keep things optimal for the task in hand.

Great captures.

Maybe you could have got a better angle on the Eriboll shot, a couple of feet higher would have helped, keeping the line of the shore visible.

Minor quibble, just something that would occur to me.

To anyone who has worked in full frame and medium format there is no adjustment necessary, but better lenses are a must, as the sweet spot for cheaper glass is central so smaller sensors don't show up their problems.

I would advise anyone who is interested in full frame 35mm or larger to go out and get a film camera and run it alongside their digital. You can eliminate a lot of the diappointment of film by previewing with a digital, just like we used to do with polaroids.

:)

As a member of Thurso camera club I have passed on some of my photoshop tips & hints. Why not come along as there are always like minded individuals with a varied program of lectures, competitions and practical sessions. Unfortunately this years season is drawing to a close, but there are planned some summer group outings and next season starts in the autumn. Always worth checking out. www.thursocameraclub.co.uk (http://www.thursocameraclub.co.uk)

I still haven't got round to buying a shorter lens - are you selling the Sigma by any chance???!

Absolutely fabulous shots.

Yes very inspiring photos because thev'e got me off my lazy backside and take my camera with me on the HamnavOLA to Stromness tonight. The views of Hoy should be stunning in the low evening light.
There's also a Paul Rose Band gig in the Stromness Hotel that me and Lyle are going to,just by coincedence. ;)
