Hot Cross Buns


Willdag Miller in Poltney made the best Hot Cross Buns.
They were a decent size, certainly beegger than the ones we buy nowadays.
They were more spicy too wi' plenty o' raisins in them, and of course, each had a nice Cross on top. The bairns would try to peel the Cross off and see who could do it without it breaking.
How we looked forward to the Hot Cross Buns. They were in the shop just in time for Easter and not a day before, for that would not be right ! Folk flocked from far and wide, even o'er the bridge fae Week, there they were in the queue clutching their message bags, and hoping Willdag had made enough to go round.
The Poltney housewives were delighted to see freends from the Week side and stopped to blether and exchange news. Chessie fae Mey always had a story or two to tell as she stood there in the queue, she kept them all amused !
Once home, the buns would be warmed and then spread with lashings of butter which would drip off your chin. What a treat. Later that night we would boil and then decorate our Easter Eggs all ready for rolling them doon the hill first thing in the morning. We had never seen a chocolate Easter Egg – that was yet to come. But we had the greatest fun painting our eggs and seeing which one was the bonniest.
After church and Sunday School we had another Hot Cross Bun or two for tea and went to bed thinking Easter was surely the very best time of the year .

Now the buns ir no the size o' half a croon and ye can git them a' year roond. Ye can even git a hot cross bun loaf in Tescos and the Co-op! :confused
As for lashin's o' butter, nae chance ye ken it's bad fur ye! ;)

Gronnuck, you are so right about the size - and it really matters !
As to the lashings of butter, well, a little of what you fancy etc !
