ok.. random thoughts in my head tonight..
are there any words that are universal, that all languages would know?
for some reason i thought earth would be one of them but i was wrong *G* each launguage has their own version.. so is our planet officially called earth then? *Grins*

Depends what you call language. In words, I doubt it. But in body language there are universals - laughing, crying, dismay, surprise etc.

Charlie Chaplin knew this which is why he was universal also.

Not absolutely sure of this but I think they swear in English as well. Or that might have been just for me and my mates benefit when we were working at Connahs Quay. Probably.

I have read/heard that the word "Okay" and variations on Ma, Mama, Mom etc are reckoned to span the greatest number of languages.

There's no word in the Gaelic for 'lasagne'. Or 'macaroni'.

'Two beers please' seems to be pretty universal though

How about the word Muppet. As in the felt characters in the show and not the popular slang meaning.

Dont know of any language that has an alternative word for them, as far as I am aware they are known as Muppets worldwide.
