I dont think there is much nightlife or life in orkney why not go to a city like edinburgh or glasgow or aberdeen were there is plenty of nightlife and better shops.I went a day trip to orkney with my girlfriend and spent the whole day in kirkwall and honestly i regretted within hour at least if you go to a city you can go shopping and theres loads of bars and clubs u can go to but thats just my view everyones different

I remember when i went to orkney for a day trip we went across in the ferry at john o groats and got a bus into kirkwall and honestly had a look around the shops took about 30 mins to do the best shop in kirkwall is woolworths thats how bad the other shops were and after that there was nothing else to do ended up touring the cafes we was that board and that day felt like a month never again what a horrible experience now i understand why people go across to orkney show every year and come back blazing drunk because thats all there is to do sorry to anyone that comes from orkney

went to orkney last year in march, for a few days and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. it depends on what you are looking for when you go over there, if you want bright lights and nightclubs then it maybe isn't the place to go. found the people right friendly, good crack, and had a great time just wandering about the island. the local produce is very good too.
we stayed at a place called the noust, and it wis fab. wee livin room/kitchen, bathroom, double bedroom and a pull down settee as well.

I don't think folk who go to Orkney actually go for the nightlife or the shops.[lol]

Aren't Embrace and someone else playing there the end of June? That would be a good weekend to go.

Embrace are playing as part of St Magnus Festival, "Magfest 2006" They are playing on Saturday 1st July along with Sandi Thom and others. Friday 30th June is sold out with The Proclaimers and the Saw Doctors playing. Magfest is at the Picky Arena,Kirkwall.
the night club is called Fusion and they have plenty of Dj's , bands etc on. Well worth a visit.

we lived there for a few years, there are some great specialist shops for jewelry local crafts and other stuff. Great atmosphere in the pubs, when we were there, the but and barrel had regular live bands and the torvouge (excuse spelling) and the pub next to the Kirkwall hotel were all great. The club was basic but a great crack. I believe there is a new one now. Kirkwall is a great place for a few days on the skite. Go to the newsagents, get a copy of the Orcadian see whats on and enjoy yourselfs when you get there

Kirkwall is better for a night out than anything Caithness can offer, we have had some brill weekends there, we stay in the West End hotel, here's a link with some other options too:

I am surprised at the number of Caithnessians that have never been to Orkney. I know more southerners that have been there.

I,ve been to orkney a few times i went last year with my mother and father to see my fathers realitives and to get away from the husband for a week lol. Orkney is lovely and i was 7 months pregnant when i went so not much drinking happening so i enjoyed it nice and relaxing break.
If you like to party i dont think you should really venture there but i would recommend glasgow for night life it is a great night out.:Razz Go to glasgow nearly every year for some retail shopping and a wee knees up.
