Sad news, I've just heard on the BBC that Harry Carpenter has died.

I'll post later with some of my memories of this great face of sport:(

Ach, it's a shame, another stellar voice of sport lost to us recently.

Bob Crampsey (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/scotland/7538396.stm), Bill McLaren (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/scotland/8468516.stm) and now Harry Carpenter.

All of them were identifiable voices that informed and educated my juvenile mind in the matters of sporting endeavour. And their efforts shall not be forgotten.

RIP Harry.

I always liked Harry Carpenter. He seemed like just a regular bloke who happened to know about the sport.

My favorite memory of him was when Lord Mountbatten came to present the trophy at the Sports Personality of the Year show. Harry was standing right by him as he regaled the country with the tale of a polo ball that went "right up the polo pony's arse". The look on Harry's face was well within the "Please God, take me now" range.
