It annoys me that companies use 0870 and 0845 (or similar numbers) which cost loads more to dial, but it really gets under my skin that the UK Government is also jumping on the bandwagon.

The final 'rip-off Britain'-style disgrace in my book is that that the Government recognise that it is outrageous to expect people to call 0845 & 0870 type numbers to speak to their Doctor and have now banned Doctors Surgeries from having such numbers whilst the Government's own use of them is increasing at warp speed. What hipocritical thieves!

There are quite a few petitions at the Number 10 website but the ones which have the most signatures are below.

If you, like me, feel that it is taking from the poor to give to the rich or at the very least giving with right hand to take back with the left then please add your signature too!

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to stop 0845 & 0870 chages to job center plus and other goverment offices"

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to answer why The Department for Work and Pensions profiteer over £250,000 a year from 0845 hotlines to advise those on low incomes about benefit and winter fuel payments."

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Stop the Jobcentres using 0845, 0870 or 090 number."

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to ban the use of non-geographic numbers (0845, 0870, etc) from all public bodies, including the Police, GP surgeries and other NHS departments, Benefits Agency departments and all other public and government bodies"

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Ban0845/

This one has a closing date of tomorrow:

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Change central or local gvernment use of 0870,0845 and similar calls to local or STD numbers."

Thanks for your support!

I always go online when it is 0870 numbers you have to dial. Here's a website that will give you 'proper' phone numbers for companys etc (saynoto0870.com) ;)

Tis a good site :)

0800 numbers annoy me - not free if you ring from a mobile... And I do most of my ringing in my lunch break at work (by the time I get home the call centres are usually shut :( ).

That is the fault of the Mobile Phone Company. So you should pnone from a Landline and that way the 0800 Number would be Free.

I do not know what call centre's you are calling but any I need to call are open 24/7.

If I remember correctly the Hospital have public phones. If you use one of these then you would still be able to phone a 0800 Number with no cost to you.
