if you hover over it, it tells your that you are subscribed in that thread..

If it's http://forum.caithness.org/images/buttons/firstnew.gif this symbol it's to indicate that there are new posts on the thread, and clicking on it will take you to the first post after the ones you have read previously.

If you mean http://forum.caithness.org/images/statusicon/thread_dot_hot.gif this symbol then as per Celtic1888's reply it means you have posted on that thread.
