PENSIONERS have been robbed in their own homes by conmen posing as BT engineers.
Five women in their 70s and 80s fell victim to the bogus callers in just 24 hours on Glasgow's south side. Two of them each had £500 stolen. The conmen first struck in Carmunnock Road, Simshill.
A man claiming to be working on telephone lines for BT gained access to an 84-year-old woman's home before stealing her handbag and house keys. The second incident happened an hour later in Ashmore Road, Merrylee.
Fortunately the 76-year-old woman was suspicious and the man ran off empty-handed.
The third incident was in Holmhead Road, Cathcart. A neighbour of the 83-year-old resident arrived at the same time and scared off the bogus caller.
Then a 70-year-old woman in Drakemire Avenue, Castlemilk was robbed of her handbag, bank cards, mobile, keys and around £500 in cash after inviting a man into her home. The fifth incident happened in Cartvale Road, Battlefield.
An elderly couple aged 77 and 82 were targeted and a man escaped with a handbag containing keys and £500 cash.
Police say in each case the conman claimed to be working for BT and needed to check the phone line. Constable Rob Hay, of the community safety department at Aikenhead Road police station, said: "These are despicable crimes as they target elderly people in their homes.
"Often the impact can be far reaching and affect their quality of life."

My Brother was telling me on the phone tonight about a couple of his neighbours who befriended an elderly lady, solely with the intent to rob her of her life savings, they are now serving 8 years & 5 years respectively, and their children are in care.
what a despicable low life pair they are, only the lowest form of scum could and would do such a thing to someone who had worked hard all their days and saved so hard. they should be left to rot in jail[mad]
