I just want a all around store like woolies was like. You got games, dvds, cds, clothes for kids, toys, household things etc etc etc. Thats what Thurso definetely needs. Wick has Tesco at the moment.

I think that is a brilliant idea. Or why dont you open an art gallery yourself or it may give some arty types pause for thought well done.

I want Woolies back too! I miss Woolies :(. I'd settle for Wilko's or summat instead though (cheap date, me ;) hehehe)

A proper soft play area would be great!
With play areas from baby up to age 12 or more.. (different sections)
A little drinks/snacks counter..tables to sit at while watching the kids..

Make the old Woolies store into an indoor open market with the traders who currently are out in the street could have a permenant location, increase stalls with local produce, and have a kids area and coffee shop. This would make a great community centre.

you beat me to it!
i think this is the best solution, a mini version of inverness's victorian market!
local wares, will help small time business's to get trade etc.
at least it would vary as stalls came and went!

We looked at the idea of indoor market for Wick 'woolies' before Ethel Austin came along but were not encouraged by owners response, rent or rates.
A very expensive project unless rebates/ discounts available.

I think that is part of the problem for many start-up businesses. The owners of empty properties appear to be happy to sit on ther premises and hope someone comes along waving a huge wedge of cash at them.

It would be good to see a couple more landlords prepared to take on a little risk and give start-ups a helping hand (in other words take a long-term view of their own viability) as opposed to the apparent short-sightedness we see now.

What, all of them? I have to say I find it some sort of a miracle that either Currys or Dixons have stayed in business this long. I haven't experienced PC World, as they grew up after I fled the country.

Wasn't just there socks that shrunk. Majority of kiddies things I bought shrunk after a few washes and they wernt tumble dried so that wasn't the cause.

We would love to have something like a really nice book shop with cafe or coffee shop. Lots of space, comfy chairs and settees, wide choice of books, magazines, dvd's, hobby equipment perhaps. Could incorporate music sales with perhaps guest spots for various artists.

Don't knock TK Maxx

much of what's on sale there is genuine discount on good labels: if you know quality and can spot a bargain, you can save a lot of money. Eg a £300 handbag for £60, or a cashmere sweater from a good brand at tesco prices. Their homeware includes good quality- Le Creuset. yes there is some tat- but the good stuff is in there.

The main thing is to get that site rented before it falls into disrepair. remember it wasn't so long ago everyone was getting excited over a new mall beside tesco in Wick. Where are those shops now?

Last time I came north I noticed some big changes in the town centre- and a few old familiar faces have shut their doors: Harpers and Fairways to name but two. And what happened to Jacques Vert?

I always thought that DR Simpsons catered for the first part of your desires and Morag's next door looked after the coffee shop side.

Instead of someone investing a large ammount of money on the old Woolies to put those two established companies out of business with competition on there door step, just knock an hole in the wall and put a door in.:Razz Simples.

Hi Kevin,

re-your response i actually feel increased competition to be a good thing as it facilitates customer choice. No disrespect to either business mentioned but book shops with combined cafe facilities have the potential to create wonderful atmospheres where people can relax, browse, integrate, socialise, take the children, meet friends etc all whilst developing knowledge and increasing the sheer scope of literary awareness. When we go south all our family love to spend time in the huge bookshops as they are seen as both interesting and exciting.

i did also mention several other things which could be incorporated -perhaps it could also be used to provide employment training opportunities or sections leased to small businesses.

I've heard this also from a reliable source which should certainly liven up, and bring some foot-fall, to that end of town.
